When Hope Isn't Found in Your Circumstances

When Hope Isn't Found in Your Circumstances

"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." (Hebrews 6:19)

If you've lived long enough, you've probably realized something- life has a way of changing when you least expect it.

One season everything seems to be falling into place. Your relationships feel healthy, work is going well, your family is doing well, and you finally feel like you're catching your breath. Things seem to flow effortlessly. Then, almost overnight, life shifts. A diagnosis. A betrayal. Financial stress. The loss of someone you love. A prayer that seems to go unanswered.

Those moments have a way of bringing everything into perspective. They reveal what we've been leaning on to carry us through life.

I've found that when life takes an unexpected turn, it often exposes where my heart has been looking for security. Have I been anchoring my peace in circumstances that constantly change, or in a Savior who never does?

It's a question I've had to ask myself more than once because it's so easy to place our hope in what we can see, control, and understand. But when those things inevitably change, we're left searching for something steady enough to hold us.

Hope That Depends on Circumstances

The world has a lot to offer. There is beauty all around us- relationships, accomplishments, laughter, family, vacations, meaningful work, exciting milestones, and moments that make life feel incredibly full. But the same world also holds disappointment, loss, uncertainty, injustice, suffering, and heartbreak. That is simply the reality of living in a broken world.

For someone whose hope is rooted only in what this world offers, life often becomes an emotional rollercoaster. When circumstances are good, they feel secure. When life is going their way, they feel hopeful. But when life inevitably takes a turn, and it always does, their emotions often take a turn with it. They begin asking questions like, Why does this always happen to me? Why can't my life just be easier? Why do I keep getting disappointed?

The truth is, when we build our hope on what we can see, what we can control, and what the world offers us, we all end up on that emotional rollercoaster. Our circumstances become the measuring stick for our peace. If life is going well, we're okay. If life falls apart, so does our hope.

It's exhausting because we're placing our confidence in things that were never meant to carry that weight.

The Hope of a Believer Is Different

This is where the life of a believer begins to look different.

Following Jesus does not mean we are exempt from hardship. Scripture never promises that. In fact, Jesus tells us plainly, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

Believers still experience grief. We still battle disappointment. We still wrestle with fear, uncertainty, and moments of doubt. David did. Elijah did. The disciples did. Some of the strongest people in Scripture poured out their questions and emotions before God.

The difference isn't that believers never struggle, because we do. The difference is where we take our struggle.

Surrender Changes Everything

As I've grown in my relationship with Jesus, I've realized there is so much I simply cannot control. I can't control other people's choices. I can't control every outcome. I can't control when God answers a prayer or exactly how He chooses to work.

But I can control where I take my burdens.

Instead of trying to carry everything myself, I bring it to Jesus.

I bring Him my fear.

My disappointment.

My confusion.

My questions.

My tears.

Instead of trying to figure everything out on my own, I surrender the things that were never mine to carry in the first place. That doesn't mean my emotions immediately disappear or improve, nor that I suddenly have every answer.

But something always shifts within me when I surrender... when I lay down what I've been carrying and place it in God's hands. It's not something I can manufacture on my own; it's the work of something far more powerful.

When Faith Begins to Speak

After I've poured everything out before Him, the Holy Spirit begins gently reminding me of God's faithfulness.

I begin remembering the prayers He has already answered. The impossible situations He has already brought me through. The doors He has opened. The provisions I never saw coming. The peace He has given me before. This is EVIDENCE of Him working in my life, and my mind responds to it.

Almost without realizing it, my inner dialogue starts changing.

"If He provided then, He will provide now."

"If He carried me through that season, He will carry me through this one."

"Keep trusting. Keep stepping forward. You're not walking alone."

It's like striking a match in a dark room. The room hasn't changed. The circumstances haven't changed. But suddenly there's light.

Hope begins rising again.

Peace starts replacing panic.

Not because my situation suddenly became easier, but because my perspective has shifted back to the One who never changes. The One who is always steady in an incredibly unsteady world. Remember, Jesus slept.... IN THE MIDDLE OF A STORM. We can trust Him fully with whatever we are carrying.

A Strength the World Cannot Give

This kind of hope isn't positive thinking, and it isn't pretending everything is okay. We cannot manufacture this through human strength, sheer determination, willpower, or self-discipline.

This hope, this peace, is the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit.

When we say yes to Christ, we receive something this world cannot offer. We receive His presence. His guidance. His comfort. His peace. His strength.

That doesn't mean we stop feeling pain. Rather, it means our pain no longer has the final say.

Bottom line: there is a strength that comes from walking with Jesus that this world simply cannot provide. It's the ability to keep moving forward even when you don't have all the answers because your confidence is no longer in yourself... it's in Him.

Don't Let the Enemy Define Your Struggle

Maybe today you feel defeated.

Maybe it feels like no matter what you do, life just keeps coming at you.

Maybe you feel misunderstood, judged, and criticized.

Maybe you're emotionally exhausted and drained.

Maybe you're questioning whether you're strong enough to handle what you're facing.

Can I encourage you with something I've had to remind myself of countless times?

Do not let the enemy convince you that because you're struggling, you're somehow not a strong believer. I've heard those whispers within myself SO many times. The enemy has told me:

"You shouldn't still struggle with this."

"If your faith were stronger, you wouldn't feel this way."

"Something must be wrong with you."

Those thoughts do NOT come from God.

The enemy wants us to believe our emotions define our faith, but feeling discouraged doesn't mean your faith is weak. Feeling anxious doesn't mean you've failed God. Feeling doubt doesn't mean you've lost your relationship with Him. It simply means you're human.

The question isn't whether doubt will ever knock at your door, because it will. The question is what you'll do when it arrives.

Will you allow it to take root?

Or will you take it to Jesus?

Renew Your Mind Daily

This is why Romans 12:2 has become so meaningful to me:

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Notice Paul doesn't say our minds are renewed once. It's a continual process. Paul fully understood this and explained it well.

Every single day we're faced with a choice: Will I allow the voices of fear, disappointment, and the world around me to shape my thinking, or will I intentionally return my mind to God's truth?

When fear whispers, answer it with His promises.

When shame speaks, answer it with His grace.

When hopelessness tries to settle in, remember His faithfulness.

Rebuke the lies before they have the opportunity to take root.

Remember that you have been set apart. You are no longer living only for this world. Your identity, your hope, and your future are found in Christ.

THINKING THIS WAY IS HOW YOU RENEW YOUR MIND IN CHRIST.

He Restores My Soul

One of my favorite passages in all of Scripture is Psalm 23.

"He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul."

I love that David doesn't say God simply restores our circumstances. He restores our soul. Sometimes the situation doesn't immediately change, but we do.

We hit our knees, give it to Jesus, and get up off that floor a different person.

Our perspective changes.

Our strength returns.

Our hope is renewed.

Our peace is restored.

That is what Jesus continues to do for those who belong to Him.

So if you're walking through a difficult season today, please let me encourage you not to lose heart. Bring your burdens to Jesus. Let Him remind you of His faithfulness. Let Him speak louder than your fear. Let Him restore what this world has tried to steal.

Because the same God who carried you yesterday is carrying you today. He hasn't forgotten you, and He hasn't abandoned you... even if you feel that way. I understand this- I've felt this exact thing many times, only to be reminded that His presence in my life is stronger than ever.

A Prayer

I'd love to leave you with a prayer in hopes that you will find comfort and a renewed sense of His hope.

"Dear Jesus, thank You for being my constant when everything around me feels uncertain. Thank You for reminding me of Your goodness when my mind wants to doubt. Thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit, who strengthens me, comforts me, and continually points me back to truth.

When fear tries to take over, help me fix my eyes on You instead of my circumstances. Renew my mind daily. Help me recognize the lies of the enemy before they take root, and give me the courage to replace them with Your truth.

Thank You for leading me beside still waters.

Thank You for restoring my soul.

I trust that the same God who has been faithful in every season will continue to be faithful today. Surely Your goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

In Jesus' name, Amen."
